Orquigonia - a botanique garden of orchids

View Guatemala on divatmotoros's travel map.

This was the third tourist attraction we visited in Guatemala (after Tikal National Park and Coffee Tour Chicoj) and we agreed that all were well presented, great content, nicely maintained and clean toilets so overall a very positive experience.

The orchid garden near Coban was founded in 2007 by the children of famous local environmental protagonist Oscar Archila Euler. After entering wenwatched a short movie about the history of the protection work and then we received magnifying glasses to start the tour of the garden.

The steep small walkways winded through the jungle and there were several informative boards enroute. The guide spoke English well and explained a lot of fascinating facts about orchids. We learned that there are about 1500 different orchids across Guatemala and in this relatively small garden they had over 700 of those on display!

Some were larger than our palm, some were as tiny as a dollarcent and everything in between. All different colors.and shaped and even smells: from cinemon to vanilla amd honey all different kinds of orchids. All in all it was a great experience, spent about two hours there and it was a memorable experience.
